“It was in a dark cinema that my three-year-old son and I discovered the music of Le Commandant Couche-Tôt.

And yet, his music is all about colour: the iridescent impressions of films projected onto the screen are echoed by polychromatic, impressionistic keyboards.

The Commandant’s pianos, Fender Rhodes and other synthesizers thus accompany the viewer-listener on a multisensory journey.

His musical palette reflects a wide and varied range of influences: British acid jazz (Galliano, Brand New Heavies, Jamiroquai), 1970s funk (Deodato, Donald Byrd, Lonnie Liston Smith), and film music (François de Roubaix, Lalo Schifrin and Quincy Jones).

A wonderful sensory awakening for young and old alike!”

LES VOYAGES DU COMMANDANT

live cinema

The project combines the screening of an animated film with live-performed music. It is suited to concert halls, cinemas, festivals, as well as interdisciplinary and young-audience programmes.

The staging tells a poetic journey through fantasy and storytelling, with a strongly cinematic and musical character.

Duration: 45 min
Format: cine-concert / live audiovisual performance
Audience: families and general audiences
Team: Anthony Malka (Le Commandant)

Artistic Note Intention

The film concert "Le Commandant Couche-tôt" does not treat music as mere accompaniment to the images, but as a narrative layer in its own right. It makes visible what lies between the images: emotions, thoughts, tensions and imagination. Image and live music enter into a constant dialogue and together create a unique experience that unites concert and film.

Universe

The world of "Le Commandant Couche-tôt" moves between everyday life and adventure, reality and imagination. A poetic, at times humorous visual language transforms seemingly ordinary situations into extraordinary experiences. The music accompanies this journey with changing sound colours – sometimes intimate and restrained, sometimes rhythmic, powerful or atmospheric – and opens up new emotional spaces.

The Relationship between Image and Music

The relationship between image and music is dynamic and multilayered. At times the music follows the movements and rhythm of the images precisely; at others it deliberately sets a counterpoint and opens up new interpretations. It amplifies emotions, tells what is invisible and creates moments of silence in which the image can speak for itself. The result is a living dialogue in which film and music inspire each other and together develop a poetic and immersive narrative.

Synopsis

Les voyages du Commandant tells of two fantastic expeditions: the first leads him to a mysterious island lost in the middle of the Pacific, the second on a journey down the Amazon, where he is pursued by imaginary creatures. Between reality and fantasy, poetic adventures unfold, full of secrets, discoveries and extraordinary encounters.

Performance Format Projection

At the centre of the performance is the film projection. The two animated short films are shown on a large screen and form the visual starting point of the performance. The images unfold a poetic narrative in which adventure, humour and fantasy blend together.

Scenography

The scenography is deliberately minimal and creates a fluid transition between cinema and concert. The musicians are part of the set and remain visible throughout the performance. Light, instruments and projection surface form a shared space in which image and music relate to one another without overlapping.

Live Music

The music is performed live and forms an independent narrative layer within the performance. Part of the composition consists of pre-produced sequences and soundscapes, triggered and controlled in real time via Ableton Live. The remaining musical part is played live on keyboards and responds directly to the rhythm, atmosphere and dramaturgy of the images.

The interplay of sequences and live keyboard parts creates a lively and flexible sound world. Each performance thus becomes an organic dialogue between film and music, in which precision and spontaneous interpretation have equal room.

"Le Commandant Couche-tôt Live" is aimed at a broad audience and is equally suited to families, children, teenagers and adults. The poetic visual language, the humour and the live music appeal to different generations and make for a shared cultural experience.

The performance is also an excellent fit for school screenings. It offers low-threshold access to animated film, live music and audiovisual art, and can be complemented by educational programmes or artist talks.

Artistic Cast

Anthony Malka – keyboards

Surrounded by his keyboards, Anthony Malka performs the music live, combining sequences with keyboard parts played in the moment. The result is a living dialogue between film, sound and performance.
